As of July 1 2000, when restructuring took effect in Connecticut, CL&P and UI customers may choose their energy supplier for a lower rate.

You have two choices:
1) You can remain a full service customer of CL&P or UI (choose not to change) and pay the standard rate

2) You can choose a new provider of electricity with a lower rate

CL&P and UI are required to provide Standard Offer service, which is regulated by the DPUC. (Dept of Public Utilities Control)

as they have done in the past.

CL&P AND UI are still responsible for maintaining the poles and wires and providing repairs and restorations after storms.
